The University of St Andrews, one of Scotland’s oldest and most prestigious institutions, spans 140 buildings across the town. Led by the Estates Management team and Environment Officer Barbara Aitken, the university adopted Warp-It to redistribute surplus items including furniture, electrical equipment, lab and medical equipment, fixtures, and office consumables.
The Estates Management team drove the implementation, recognising that a sprawling campus of 140 buildings created natural silos where surplus items in one department were invisible to others. Warp-It provided the visibility needed to connect supply with demand across the entire university.
Items listed range from standard office furniture and electrical equipment to specialist lab and medical equipment, fixtures and fittings, and everyday office consumables. The breadth of categories means almost any surplus item can find a new home.
“The system provides management reports so that the University can monitor carbon dioxide and financial and staff time savings.”
Barbara Aitken, Environment Officer, University of St Andrews
The university achieved return on investment on the very first day of using the platform. Within just three months, over £30,000 had been saved, 970 KG of waste diverted from landfill, and 2.8 tonnes of CO2 emissions avoided.
The built-in reporting capabilities allow the university to track and demonstrate its environmental and financial impact to senior management, making the case for continued investment in sustainability initiatives.
