What began as Sunderland City Council’s internal reuse programme grew into something far more ambitious. The Sunderland Partnership expanded Warp-It access beyond the council to include over 300 schools, NHS organisations, the university, and more than 300 voluntary sector organisations – creating one of the UK’s most comprehensive multi-sector reuse networks.
The partnership model allowed surplus items from the council, NHS and university to flow to schools, charities and voluntary organisations that would otherwise have no budget for them. This created a virtuous cycle where larger organisations reduced waste disposal costs while smaller organisations received free resources.
The network also secured 100 jobs in the local community and donated £25,000 worth of items to charities, demonstrating the wider social impact of collaborative reuse.
The partnership achieved £500,000 in combined savings, diverted 50 tonnes of waste from landfill, prevented 4,500 tonnes of supply chain waste, and avoided 185 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Beyond the numbers, the programme secured 100 local jobs and channelled £25,000 to charities.
The Sunderland Partnership won the National Compact Voice Award and was a finalist at the Circular Economy Awards 2015, recognising it as a leading example of cross-sector collaboration for sustainability.
