NIBSC is a research-intensive organisation responsible for developing over 90% of International Standards for biological medicines. With around 300 staff, the institute plays a critical role in global health safety. Led by Jude Hughes, Environment and Energy Manager, NIBSC launched Warp-It in October 2013 with a focus on embedding sustainability and reuse thinking into the organisation’s culture.
NIBSC’s approach centred on cultural change – getting staff to think about reuse as a first option rather than an afterthought. The photo upload capability was highlighted as particularly invaluable, allowing staff to see exactly what items were available before claiming them.
As a research organisation with specialist equipment needs, the visual aspect of Warp-It proved essential for matching the right items to the right teams.

Within just six months of launching, NIBSC saved £25,000 and avoided 14 tonnes of CO2 emissions. For an organisation of 300 staff, this represents an impressive per-capita impact, demonstrating that even smaller organisations can achieve significant results with Warp-It.
The programme successfully shifted staff behaviour, making reuse a natural part of how the institute manages its resources and equipment.
